How many steps a minute is fast walking?

About 100 steps a minute. That is the pace research uses for moderate-intensity walking, often called brisk walking.

The number: about 100 steps a minute

In the CADENCE-Adults study, researchers measured adults walking on a treadmill while counting their steps and measuring how hard their bodies worked. Around 100 steps a minute marked moderate intensity, and around 130 marked vigorous intensity, for adults aged 21 to 40. A later report confirmed 100 steps a minute for ages 41 to 60; for older adults the evidence is less clear.

How it feels

You breathe harder than when strolling, and you can still talk, but you couldn't sing.

Check your own pace

Count your steps for 15 seconds while you walk, then multiply by four. 25 steps in 15 seconds is 100 steps a minute.

Why 150 minutes a week

The CDC suggests adults get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week, with brisk walking as its example. For instance, 30 minutes on five days.

How Simple Walker uses it

Each minute of a walk at about 100 steps or more counts as fast walking. Today shows your fast-walking minutes, and the Week view tracks them against 150 minutes. Simple Walker is for everyday fitness, not a medical device: for advice about your own health, ask your doctor.
