A found walk: its minutes, distance, steps, floors, energy, pace and a heart-rate chartToday: today's steps in large type, the day strip, then Walking, Distance, Longest walk, Floors, Heart rate and EnergyWeek: the week's steps, one bar of steps per day, one strip showing when you walked, then Walking, Steps per day, Distance and Floors

Nothing to start

You just walk

Keep your iPhone with you, as you already do.

Your walks appear

Each walk of five minutes or more shows up on its own, with its start time, minutes, distance and steps.

Tap one for more

Its minutes, distance, pace and, with a watch, your heart rate.

Your steps, and six plain numbers

Steps
The headline: all of today's steps, walks or not, and how that compares with yesterday at the same time.
Walking
How long you spent in walks today.
Distance
How far you went today, walks or not.
Longest walk
Your longest single walk today.
Floors
Flights of stairs climbed, counted by your iPhone.
Heart rate
Your average for the whole day, as Apple Health works it out. It needs an Apple Watch.
Energy
One number, in kilocalories. Never two that disagree.

A Week tab adds up seven days of steps, one bar a day, and compares them with the week before. A Bests tab keeps your records. Arrows by the date, or a swipe, step back through earlier days and weeks, as far as Apple Health goes.

Today: steps in large type, the day strip black where you walked and light grey where you moved about, then Walking, Distance, Longest walk, Floors, Heart rate and Energy

Your whole day, on one line

A thin strip from 6:00 to 22:00. Solid black where you walked, light grey where you were moving about between walks. One look tells you how your day went. Tap a walk's mark to open that walk.

Steps, distance, floors and energy count your whole day, so they match the Health app, and heart rate is the day's average. Walking time and your longest walk count your walks only. How walks are found

One walk: its minutes, distance, steps, floors, energy, pace in one word, and a heart-rate chart

Every walk, in plain numbers

Tap a walk for its minutes, distance, steps, floors and energy, and its pace in one word: Fast or Easy. If you wore an Apple Watch, your heart rate is drawn as one calm line.

The week: its total steps, steps each day as bars with the number above each one, one strip showing when you walked, then Walking, Steps per day, Distance and Floors

Your week at a glance

Your steps each day, with the number above each bar, and how the week compares with the last one. Below the bars, one strip shows when you walked across the week: walks in black, moving about in light grey. Tap a bar, or a day on the strip, to open that day. Walking time, steps per day, distance and floors sit underneath.

Bests: the walker holding a trophy above five records, each with its number, its date and a walker pose

Your bests

Your records, from every day Apple Health holds: most steps in a day, best week, best month, farthest in a day and most floors in a day. Each shows its date and its own walker pose, and tapping a one-day record opens that day. No streaks: a streak that ends is bad news.

Good news only

When a number beats your usual (your last four weeks, up to the same time of day), the walker celebrates with you. If you like, a quiet notification tells you: at most one a day, and never "less than usual". It comes within about an hour, and it's the one switch in Settings: "Tell me when I beat my usual".

  • Steps

8,000 steps so far. Ahead of your usual.

  • Walking time

40 min of walking by 10:00. More than usual.

  • Distance

6.1 km today. Further than you usually go.

  • Floors

12 floors today. The most this month.

  • Longest walk

35 min in one go. Your longest walk in 2 weeks.

  • Rare wins

58 min in one go. Your longest walk in 4 weeks.

Private by design

Simple Walker reads from Apple Health and writes nothing to it. It makes no internet connections and has no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Everything stays on your iPhone.

Questions

Why did we make it?

Most walking apps are about everything except walking, with screens of numbers, ads or a subscription. Apple Health has the data but doesn't show walking clearly. We wanted one calm screen that answers a simple question: how much did I walk today?

Is it really free?

Yes. No purchases, no subscriptions and no ads. If you like it, a kind review on the App Store helps other people find it.

How does it find my walks without a start button?

Your iPhone already counts your steps minute by minute in Apple Health. Simple Walker looks for stretches of five minutes or more at walking pace, allowing short stops like a traffic light, and shows each one as a walk.

Which numbers count my whole day, and which only my walks?

Steps, distance, floors and energy count your whole day, so they match the Health app, and heart rate is the day's average. Walking time and your longest walk count only your walks: five minutes or more at walking pace. Moving around the house adds steps, not walking time. Each walk's own heart rate shows when you tap that walk.

Can I look back at earlier days?

Yes. The arrows next to the date, or a swipe left or right, step through past days. A small Today pill by the date brings you back, and so does tapping the Today tab again. Past days show the same numbers, compared with the day before. In Week, the arrows and swipes move seven days at a time, and tapping a bar or a day on the strip opens that day on Today. Back stops at the first day Apple Health holds, and a day with nothing in Apple Health says No steps recorded.

Why didn't a walk show up?

It needs your iPhone with you (a pocket or bag is fine) and five minutes or more at walking pace. A slow stroll around a shop counts as steps, not as a walk. Pull down on Today to refresh.

Why isn't climbing stairs a walk?

On stairs you climb floors quickly while your steps stay slow, which isn't walking. Those minutes still count in your steps and floors, and show as moving about on the day strip.

Are there streaks?

No. A streak that ends is bad news. The Bests tab shows your records instead: most steps in a day, best week, best month, farthest in a day and most floors in a day.

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No. Your iPhone counts steps, distance and floors on its own. If you wear an Apple Watch, Today shows your average heart rate for the day, and each walk shows your heart rate during it.

Does it run in the background or drain my battery?

No. It reads Apple Health when you open it. If you turn on good-news notifications, Apple Health wakes it at most once an hour when new steps arrive, so it can check.

What does it read, and where does it go?

Steps, walking distance, floors, heart rate and active energy, read from Apple Health on your iPhone. It writes nothing to Health, makes no internet connections and has no account. Nothing leaves your iPhone.

Can it show a map of my walk?

Not yet. It shows when and how far you walked, not where. A map is on our list of ideas; tell us in an App Store review if you'd use it.

Is it a medical device?

No. It's for everyday fitness only and shows numbers your iPhone and Apple Watch already measured.

Go for a walk. It's already counted.
